WhatFlow and SMS cart reminders at a glance
| Consideration | WhatFlow | SMS cart reminders |
|---|---|---|
| Message format | Branded template with product details, a cart link and room for a friendly note. Customers reply in the same thread. | Plain text in a carrier inbox; images need MMS where it's supported. |
| Cost | WhatFlow from $0 (Free) or $4.99/month for 2,000 messages, plus Meta's per-template charge. Length doesn't change the price. | Billed per segment: 160 Latin or 70 non-Latin characters each, so longer or localized text costs more. |
| Replies | Go to WhatFlow's team inbox with no seat fees, where staff can share products from the live catalog. | Go to the SMS tool's inbox, if it has one; often a short keyword flow. |
| Shopify workflow | Built-in abandoned checkout recovery plus Shopify Flow triggers and actions. | Depends on the SMS app's Shopify integration. |
| Best fit | Markets and customers who already chat on WhatsApp. | Markets where SMS is the default and WhatsApp use is low. |
Use WhatsApp instead of SMS for cart recovery wherever your shoppers use WhatsApp. A WhatsApp reminder can name the product, carry a cart link, and invite the shopper to reply with whatever stopped them. SMS is billed per segment, so the same helpful message costs more and gets less. WhatFlow sends the reminder from Shopify and catches every reply in a team inbox with no seat fees.
At a glance
- Format: WhatsApp gives you a branded template with room to be helpful. SMS gives you 160 characters (70 in Arabic, Hindi, Urdu or with an emoji) before it splits.
- Replies: WhatsApp replies land in WhatFlow's shared inbox. SMS replies often go to a keyword flow.
- Cost: WhatFlow prices by message volume, from Free; Meta adds a per-template fee. SMS charges per segment, per send.
- Trust: WhatsApp shows your business name and profile in the chat. An SMS comes from a number or short code.
How do the costs compare?
SMS pricing hides in the segment count. A single Latin-script SMS holds 160 characters; split messages hold 153 per segment. Switch to a non-Latin script or add an emoji and a segment holds 70 characters (67 when split). A friendly reminder in Hindi with a product name and a cart link can easily run to three segments, and you pay for each.
WhatsApp pricing works differently. Meta charges per delivered template message, by category and country, regardless of length. WhatFlow's plan sits on top.
A worked example with hypothetical numbers. Say 300 opted-in shoppers abandon checkout each month and get one reminder:
- WhatsApp with WhatFlow: 300 messages. On the Free plan, the first 100 are included and the next 200 cost $0.01 each, so $2. On Starter, $4.99/month covers 2,000 messages (as of November 2026). Plus Meta's per-template charge.
- SMS: 300 × your provider's per-segment rate × segments per message. At three segments, that's 900 billable units.

What does a good WhatsApp cart reminder look like?
Hi Rohan, your Trail Runner 2 (size 9) is still in your cart: {cart_link}. Questions about fit or delivery to Pune? Reply here and we'll help.
No character counting. No "Reply STOP" eating a third of the message. And if Rohan replies "is there a wider fit?", your teammate can answer and share the right product straight from your live catalog.
The template editor maps checkout fields (name, product, cart link) straight into the message. More examples are in 40 WhatsApp message templates for Shopify.
Why do replies matter in cart recovery?
Because the shopper who replies is telling you exactly what's in the way. "Is COD available?" "Will it arrive before Diwali?" "Can I get this in black?" Answer those and the cart often converts without a discount.
WhatFlow puts those replies in a shared inbox with assignment, filters and saved replies, and every teammate can join at no seat cost. Recovering an abandoned checkout with a useful conversation shows how to handle the common questions.

Do I need opt-in for WhatsApp cart reminders?
Yes. Meta's WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy requires opt-in before you message a customer first, and opt-outs must be honoured. A checkbox at checkout is the simplest route; collecting WhatsApp opt-ins on Shopify covers the details. SMS has its own consent rules too, which vary by country.
Is WhatFlow official and enterprise-ready?
Yes. WhatFlow WhatsApp Business API runs on the official Meta WhatsApp Cloud API with Meta-approved templates. It handles large teams (inbox assignment and filters, no seat fees at any team size, Shopify Flow automation, COD confirmation, live catalog sharing, Shopify admin extensions) and still gives small stores every feature on the Free plan.
When might SMS still make sense?
Pick SMS only if most of your shoppers are in a market where WhatsApp isn't the everyday messaging app, or for specific customers who aren't on WhatsApp. In WhatsApp-first markets (India, Pakistan, the Gulf, Brazil, Indonesia and much of Europe and Latin America) it's the channel customers already check. The general trade-offs are in WhatsApp vs SMS for Shopify.
The bottom line
Cart recovery works best as a conversation, and WhatsApp is built for conversations. WhatFlow sends the reminder from Shopify, includes every feature on every plan, and lets your whole team answer replies with no seat fees. WhatFlow WhatsApp Business API is rated 5.0/5 from 55 ratings on the Shopify App Store (as of November 5, 2026). Also running email reminders? See WhatsApp vs email cart recovery.
Questions worth asking
Is WhatsApp or SMS better for abandoned cart recovery?
Where shoppers use WhatsApp, it's the better channel: messages can be longer at no extra cost, carry a cart link and invite a reply your team can answer. SMS fits markets where WhatsApp isn't widely used.
How do I compare WhatsApp and SMS cart recovery fairly?
Send the same cart and offer to comparable groups, with your real localized copy. Check the cart link works, that reminders stop after purchase, and who answers replies on each channel.
Does WhatFlow charge extra for cart recovery?
No. Abandoned checkout recovery is included on every WhatFlow plan, including Free. You choose a plan by message volume.
What does Meta charge for WhatsApp cart reminders?
Meta bills each delivered template message by category and recipient country. Cart reminders are typically marketing templates; check Meta's pricing page for the current rate in your country.
