Recover abandoned carts on WhatsApp before you spend money retargeting the same people with ads. For shoppers who've opted in, WhatFlow sends a reminder with their cart link straight from Shopify, at a known cost per message, and lets them reply with the question that stopped them. Retargeting ads still have a job: reaching visitors you can't message directly.

Why should WhatsApp come first?

Because you're paying to reach someone you can already reach. A shopper who typed their number at checkout and opted in to WhatsApp messages is one message away. Bidding against every other store in an ad auction to show them a carousel is the expensive route.

And the message does more. Say someone abandons a ₹4,200 pair of headphones. The next morning:

Hi Arjun, your Studio Pro headphones are still in your cart: {cart_link}. Wondering about battery life or warranty? Reply here and we'll answer.

If Arjun replies "does it work with my laptop over Bluetooth?", your team answers in WhatFlow's shared inbox. An ad can't hold that conversation. Recovering an abandoned checkout with a useful conversation has more examples.

How do the costs compare?

A worked example with hypothetical numbers. Say 500 shoppers abandon checkout each month and 300 have opted in to WhatsApp.

WhatsApp with WhatFlow: 300 reminders, plus the order updates you already send, say 4,000 in total. WhatFlow's Plus plan is $9.99/month for 5,000 messages (as of November 2026). Add Meta's per-template charge; cart reminders are usually marketing templates. That's a cost you can calculate before you send.

Retargeting: suppose you budget a hypothetical $300 a month to retarget the same 500 visitors. Your cost per recovered cart depends on the auction, your creative and the season, and it usually climbs right when you need it most (sale periods).

Run both and measure honestly: use a holdout group, agree an attribution window, and don't let both channels take credit for the same order. Budgeting WhatsApp by cost per useful outcome shows how. Our plans are on the pricing page.

How do I set it up in Shopify?

WhatFlow includes abandoned checkout recovery on every plan, Free included. For more control, use Shopify Flow, where WhatFlow adds WhatsApp actions:

  1. Send one reminder about an hour after abandonment.
  2. Skip shoppers who've since placed an order.
  3. Route replies to the right teammate in the inbox.

Opt-in is required under Meta's WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy, and opt-outs must be honoured. Collecting WhatsApp opt-ins on Shopify covers checkout consent. To avoid messaging the wrong people, see Shopify customer segments vs generic bulk sending.

Can ads and WhatsApp work together?

Yes, and the best combo is click-to-WhatsApp ads. Instead of sending a visitor back to a product page, the ad opens a WhatsApp chat with your store. When a shopper messages you from one and you reply within the customer service window, Meta opens a free entry point window that can stay open for up to 7 days (as of November 2026). Those chats land in WhatFlow's inbox like any other. Click-to-WhatsApp ads for Shopify explains the setup.

Is WhatFlow built for a store spending serious money on ads?

Yes. WhatFlow WhatsApp Business API runs on the official Meta WhatsApp Cloud API, and it's enterprise-ready: inbox assignment and filters, no seat fees at any team size, Shopify Flow automation at scale, COD confirmation, live catalog sharing and Shopify admin extensions. A small store starts on the Free plan with the same features.

When do retargeting ads still make sense?

Use retargeting for visitors you can't message: people who browsed but never reached checkout, or who didn't opt in to WhatsApp. That's a real audience, and ads are the right tool for it. Just exclude your WhatsApp-recovered shoppers so you're not paying twice for the same person.

The bottom line

Message the shoppers you're allowed to message, then pay to reach the rest. WhatFlow makes that first step cheap, personal and two-way, with every feature on the Free plan. WhatFlow WhatsApp Business API is rated 5.0/5 from 55 ratings on the Shopify App Store (as of November 5, 2026). Running email reminders too? See WhatsApp vs email cart recovery.

Questions worth asking

Is WhatsApp cart recovery cheaper than retargeting ads?

For opted-in shoppers, usually yes, because you pay a known app plan and a per-message Meta fee instead of bidding for impressions. WhatFlow also lets the shopper reply, which an ad can't do.

How do I measure WhatsApp recovery against retargeting?

Hold out a comparable group from each channel, agree an attribution window up front, and exclude recent buyers from both. Don't let both channels claim the same order.

Does WhatFlow charge extra for cart recovery?

No. Abandoned checkout recovery is included on every WhatFlow plan, including Free. Plans differ only by message allowance.

Does Meta charge for WhatsApp cart reminders?

Yes. Meta bills each delivered template message by category and recipient country, separately from WhatFlow's plan. Cart reminders are typically marketing templates.

What is the free entry point window for click-to-WhatsApp ads?

When a shopper messages you from a click-to-WhatsApp ad and you reply within the customer service window, Meta opens a free entry point window that can last up to 7 days, as of November 2026.
