Good product FAQs answer the specific questions buyers ask before they'll pay: will it fit, will it work with what I have, how do I care for it, what if it's wrong. Take the questions from real customer chats and reviews, answer each in the first sentence, add the one condition that changes the answer, and link out to store-wide policies. Three to six per product is plenty.
What a product FAQ is for (and what it isn't)
A product FAQ answers the questions your description didn't. That's it.
It isn't a second description written as questions. "Why is our bag the best choice for professionals?" is a sales pitch with a question mark. Nobody asks that. Shoppers skim past it and lose trust in the whole section.
It also isn't a search trick anymore. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search on May 7, 2026, according to its documentation updates log. That's actually freeing. The only reason left to write a product FAQ is that it helps someone decide, which is the reason Google's helpful content guidance says to write anything. Clear question-and-answer pairs are also easy for AI assistants to quote when someone asks about your product. For more on schema generally, see how product review schema and search stars work.
Where to find the questions
Don't brainstorm. Collect. The real questions are already sitting in:
WhatsApp chats and DMs. The most honest source. People ask on WhatsApp what they'd never type into a contact form.
Reviews. "I wish I'd known it was this heavy" is a FAQ waiting to be written.
Return reasons. "Too small" ten times means you need a sizing answer.
Your team. Ask whoever handles support: "What do you answer every single day?"
What's the difference between this and the Lite version?
Helps choose
The answer formula: answer, condition, next step
Every answer should do three things, in this order:
Answer in the first few words. Yes, no, or the number.
Condition that changes the answer. The "but" a buyer needs.
Next step if the answer depends on their situation.
Here's the difference:
Weak: Our backpack is designed with professionals in mind and features a spacious, padded compartment that accommodates a wide range of devices.
Better: Yes, for most 15-inch laptops. The sleeve is 38 × 26 × 3 cm inside. If your laptop is in a thick case, measure the case; if it's over 3 cm deep, it won't fit comfortably.
The second answer lets the buyer decide without messaging you. That's the job.
If you don't actually know the answer (you've never measured the sleeve, or the supplier's spec sheet is vague), find out before publishing. A confident wrong answer is worse than no answer.
Examples for three kinds of products
These are hypothetical, but they show the pattern.
Fashion: a linen shirt
Does it shrink?
A little, about 2 to 3% on the first warm wash. Wash it cold and hang it to dry and you won't notice. If you're between sizes and plan to tumble dry, size up.
Is it see-through?
The white is slightly sheer in bright light. The sand and navy aren't.
Skincare: a vitamin C serum
Can I use it with retinol?
Yes, but not at the same time. Use the serum in the morning and retinol at night.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
The full ingredient list is in the "Ingredients" tab. We can't give medical advice, so please check it with your doctor.
Home: a sofa
Will it fit through my door?
The narrowest part is the depth: 88 cm with the legs off. Measure your door frame and any tight corners on the way in. If you're unsure, send us a photo and measurements on WhatsApp and we'll check with you before you order.
How is it delivered?
In two boxes, to your room of choice. Assembly takes about 10 minutes: screw on the legs, clip the back on.
Notice the sofa answers end with a way to ask. For high-ticket or unusual cases, that's right.
Keep product questions and store policies apart
"What's your return policy?" is a store question, not a product one. If you paste the full policy into 200 product FAQs, you'll have 200 pages to fix the next time it changes, and you'll miss some.
Instead, write a one-line summary and link out:
Can I return it? Yes, within 14 days if unused. [Full returns policy]
The exception is when the policy is different for this product (final-sale items, hygiene products, custom orders). Then say so on the product.
Also check that the FAQ agrees with everything else on the page: the description, the size chart, the variant names and your team's saved replies. If the FAQ says "fits 15-inch laptops" and the saved reply says "fits all laptops", one of them is wrong. Our guide on using review themes to improve product copy covers keeping these in sync.
How to add product FAQs in Shopify
Two options, depending on your theme:
Same FAQs for a whole product type: in the theme editor, open your product template and add collapsible row blocks (most Online Store 2.0 themes, including Dawn, have them). Type the question as the heading and the answer as the content.
Different FAQs per product: create product metafields (for example, "faq_fit" and "faq_care"), fill them in on each product, then connect them to the collapsible rows as dynamic sources. Shopify's help page on displaying metafields shows how. Check how your theme handles a product with an empty metafield, so you don't end up showing a blank question.
Put the FAQ near the add-to-cart button or just below the description. Hiding it at the bottom of a long page defeats the point.
Give the leftover questions somewhere to go
No FAQ covers everything. Someone will always have a laptop that's an odd shape or a door with a tight corner. A WhatsApp button on the product page catches those. WhatFlow's theme-matched WhatsApp chat buttons are free forever and sit in your store's style rather than a generic floating bubble; here's how to add one to Shopify.
Just don't use the button as an excuse to skip the FAQ. If every buyer has to message you to learn the dimensions, you've made more work for them and for your team.
Free plan available
Run WhatsApp for your Shopify store with WhatFlow
Templates, COD confirmation, Shopify Flow automations and a shared team inbox with no seat fees. Every feature is included on every plan, including Free.
Set a reminder. Look at the questions that still arrive on WhatsApp for each product. If people keep asking something the FAQ already answers, the answer is unclear or hard to find. If a new question shows up five times, add it. And when a product changes (new size, new formula, new supplier), update the FAQ the same day you update the description.
Frequently asked questions
How many FAQs should a product page have?
Usually three to six. Enough to cover the questions customers actually ask about that product, few enough that a shopper can scan them on a phone in seconds.
How do I add FAQs to a Shopify product page?
Most Online Store 2.0 themes let you add collapsible rows to the product template in the theme editor. For FAQs that differ per product, store them in product metafields and connect them to the rows as dynamic sources.
Does FAQ schema still get rich results in Google?
No. Google stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. Write product FAQs because they help shoppers decide, not for a search feature.
Should product FAQs include shipping and returns?
Only a one-line summary with a link to your policy page. Copying the full policy into every product means dozens of pages to fix when it changes.
